Sound Opinions Show

Apr 29, 2015

ANNOUNCER COPY: Coming up…Punk band Against Me! candidly discusses the gender transitioning of lead singer Laura Jane Grace. And Britpop heroes Blur have reunited for a new album.

  • Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot pay tribute to soul and R&B singer Ben E. King who died on April 30. King is best known for his 1961 song “Stand By Me” as well as a string of hits recorded as a member of The Drifters.

  • Jim and Greg also eulogize “Louie Louie” singer Jack Ely of the garage band The Kingsmen. Rumors about Ely’s slurred singing even prompted a 1963 FBI investigation into whether the lyrics were actually dirty.

After coming out as a trans woman in 2012, lead singer Laura Jane Grace of the punk band Against Me! has candidly addressed her experience through their music. Against Me! joins Jim and Greg for an honest conversation about Grace’s transition. They also play songs from their recent album Transgender Dypshoria Blues.

Jim and Greg review The Magic Whip, the first album in 12 years from influential Britpop band Blur.

At the end of the show we hear comments from listeners.
