The North Carolina Republican Party's executive director says he won't seek the job again when a new chairman is elected by party activists in June.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said it was made clear to him when he took office that Global Bankers Insurance Group was treated differently than other companies under his predecessor, Wayne Goodwin.

North Carolina's Republican Party chairman is giving up party control as he faces criminal charges that he and a major donor tried to bribe the state's top insurance regulator.

The Chair of the North Carolina Republican Party Robin Hayes has been indicted on charges including bribery, wire fraud and aiding and abetting. Durham businessman and the state’s largest political donor Greg Lindberg, along with two of his associates, John Gray and John Palermo Jr., were also indicted.

The North Carolina Republican Party is rallying behind congressional candidate Mark Harris in the 9th district despite an ongoing investigation into potential fraud that could invalidate his victory. Republicans are calling on the State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement to certify the election results unless the alleged irregularities would have changed the outcome. The state elections board will hold a hearing on the fraud allegations early next year.

Senate Leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore outlined a two-year spending plan this afternoon that would maintain funding for elementary school teaching assistants, high school drivers’ education classes, and gives state employees a one-time bonus of $750.

N.C. House lawmakers have started debating a proposed budget plan that leaders revamped in an effort to win more votes from Republicans. The proposal reduces DMV fee hikes and cuts back on the money to help bring film and TV productions to North Carolina.

North Carolina House leadership has proposed a $21.1 billion budget. The plan gives teachers a five percent pay raise and does not require educators to give up career status. The Senate plan offers a larger raise but eliminates career status. The House and Senate plans also differ on Medicaid management.
