Wake County Emergency Management workers continue disaster relief efforts this morning. Saturday's tornadoes and severe thunderstorms left many homeless. Emergency Operations Center manager Steve Newton says his first priority is helping those residents start the recovery process.
Steve Newton: "We've worked pretty hard overnight on clearing off some of our major arteries. We still have folks in shelters and so we'll try to look at a long term solution for that. Because shelters, while they certainly are effective, we want to get (people) back either to their own homes or to a more permanent location."
Newton says 161 people were still in Wake County shelters this morning. He says preliminary estimates put the county's damages at several million dollars. Officials in Raleigh say there are still downed trees and traffic lights without power in some areas.
