Budget Cuts Cause Confusion in Wake School Board Elections

Some voters in Wake County did not receive voter cards this year showing new boundaries for local school districts. Residents head to the polls tomorrow to vote for five seats on the county school board among other offices. Wake Board of Elections director Cherie Poucher says county commissioners denied the funds needed to send voter cards with the new districts. Despite that, Poucher says she expects a higher turnout than normal.

Cherie Poucher: "From the interest that we have seen the past month or so, especially between the early voting and absentee by mail, I think the election has generated so much interest not only for the Board of Ed, but for the city of Raleigh and the town of Cary."
Poucher says the county usually sends new cards after Congressional and General Assembly districts are approved. The Department of Justice has not yet signed off on those maps. She says new voter cards cost about $120,000 at 20 cents per voter. Wake residents can check the county's website for their new districts along with sample ballots.
