NCAA Penalizes UNC Football Program

The UNC Football team has been banned from participating in the post-season this fall.

Jeff Tiberii: North Carolina’s football team will also lose five scholarships in each of the next three seasons, and be on probation until 2015. The NCAA announced the punishments Monday following a report by the Division 1 Committee on Infractions. Violations took between 2008 and 2010 and include academic fraud, payments to players. Britton Banowsky is chair of the Committee on Infractions.

Britton Banowsky: The committee found that a former tutor committed academic fraud with three student athletes and provided impermissible benefits valued at more than 4-thousand dollars. In addition a former assistant football coach was compensated by a sports agent for providing access to student-athletes and failed to disclose his income to the University.

Former assistant John Blake cannot coach for three years. The post-season ban includes the ACC Championship game and all Bowls. The school will still receive shared revenue from the other ACC teams playing in the post-season.

Jeff Tiberii covers politics for WUNC. Before that, he served as the station's Greensboro Bureau Chief.
