The high-tech nonprofit behind the North Carolina Research and Education Network is celebrating advances in broadband infrastructure.

MCNCbrings high speed Internet access to Universities, community colleges and the state's K-12 public schools.

The organization's new President and CEO Jean Davis says the next step involves even faster connectivity.

“They're really trying to develop all these next generation applications that are going to lead us forward with medical research, with workforce training, with energy and smart grid, with public safety.”

Davis says MCNC is working on gigabit and next-generation networks in North Carolina, Wi-Fi and more digital learning initiatives for schools.

Eric Hodge hosts WUNC’s broadcast of Morning Edition, and files reports for the North Carolina news segments of the broadcast. He started at the station in 2004 doing fill-in work on weekends and All Things Considered.
