Crews have been out all night, plowing and salting roads in the areas affected by last night's snowstorm. Roads and bridges are open, but many secondary roads still have snow and ice. The NC Department of Transportation reports that high winds on N.C. 12 in Dare County have blown sand on the road through the night. The road is open, but may be down to one lane in some places.
Most of us know the tips for driving on snow and ice: drive cautiously, leave extra room between you and the car in front of you. Here are some tips you may not know:
- Beginning to slide? Take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide. Do not apply the brakes as that will cause further loss of control of the car
- Coming to an intersection? Come to a complete stop or yield the right of way when approaching an intersection in case any vehicles coming from another direction loses control as they are trying to stop
- Are you stuck? Use your cell phone to contact the Highway Patrol statewide. Just dial *HP (*47)
- Wondering if you should go out at all? Do not call 911 or the State Highway Patrol for road conditions, in order to keep the lines clear for emergency calls.
