North Carolina Department of Transportation officials will find out this morning if the Nor'easter that skirted the Outer Banks yesterday added to the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. NC 12 was washed out in several places and covered with sand in others. There was also damage to the tension cables on Bonner Bridge. Dara Demi works for the DOT. She says repairs could take several weeks.
Dara Demi: "There is some sand on the road. Our crews have done a great job pushing as much of that sand off of NC 12 as possible and in some areas you have to realize there are feet of sand that the storm moved so it is quite a job."
Demi says as of yesterday, crews had cleared about two miles of the roadway just south of the Bonner Bridge on Hatteras Island. Ferry service continues to be the only way for residents and visitors to reach the island.
