It will be a busy week for the UNC Board of Governors. In addition to hiring a new chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill this Friday, the Board is trying to make its case to the legislature and avoid tens of millions of dollars in cuts.

Including budget cuts and reversions, the Legislature has cut the UNC system’s budget by more than $1 billion in recent years.

If they take Governor Pat McCrory’s suggestion, another $140 million or so will get cut next year.

"We’re just really concerned with the size of the cut," says UNC President Tom Ross. "It’s disproportionate in many ways to other areas of government as we understand the budget. We just think the University is a really important asset for the state of North Carolina. We’ve been through a lot. We know people believe in the University and know its importance and we will continue to invest in it as best as we can."

Republican leaders in the senate are expected to present their budget in the coming weeks.
