Construction of the 7,000+ acre development that plans to greatly expand the size and population of Pittsboro began this week with a UNC Health Care facility.
Developers announced the groundbreaking Tuesday. The 25,000 square-foot medical plaza is the first building to go up in Chatham Park. While UNC hasn't said what services the building will provide specifically, it's expected to house specialists.
"To give you examples, cardiologist, gastroenterologists, OB-GYNs," said David Hamilton, a spokesperson with BBG, the marketing firm representing the Chatham Park developers.
What's also likely is that this won't be the only medical facility in the community.
"There's a hospice facility that will eventually be built as well," said Hamilton. "And then there are plans, moving forward, as the need is there, for additional residents to have additional medical care as well."
The developers are currently looking to rezone the entire master plan after adding some 45 acres to the development. There's also a lawsuit challenging the process by which some of the project was approved. Hamilton says whatever the rezoning outcome, this first phase of construction will continue, as the original zoning permit still applies.
