Now on her seventh studio album, Suzanne Vega has put together a career that spans more than two decades, with the staying power to last several more. Vega began writing poems and songs at a very early age, and in 1984, she signed her first record deal, releasing her self-titled debut a year later. But it was her second album, 1987's Solitude Standing, that made her famous, thanks in large part to its ubiquitous, child-abuse-themed single "Luka."
Vega's next two albums, Days of Open Hand and 99.9 F, gradually helped her play with other experimental sounds, including folk music, dance and various industrial beats. Her first album in six years, Beauty & Crime, showcases an acoustic sound that's nicely matched to personal lyrics and stories about her native New York.
