The Cat Empire: Australia's Wild-Eyed Sons

The Cat Empire.
The Cat Empire.

Known for wild-eyed live shows and a sound that fuses everything from ska to hip-hop, The Cat Empire has become one of the most popular bands in Australia, releasing best-selling albums and even touring the continent in support of James Brown in 2004.

Recorded in Cuba, the band's second album (2005's Two Shoes) took The Cat Empire's Latin feel to an new level, adding "The Empire Horns" — a horn section featuring a trombone, trumpet and sax — to the lineup. Cities: The Cat Empire Album followed, and features a wide variety of guest artists and sounds, including R&B and soul influences largely absent from the group's previous releases.
