A Confederate statue in Pittsboro will stay where it is despite today's deadline set by Chatham County commissioners to begin the process of moving it.
The commissioners' order is on hold after the United Daughters of the Confederacy sued to keep the statue standing in front of Pittsboro's historic courthouse.
The commissioners' move has prompted weekly demonstrations in Pittsboro, where Neo-Confederate groups and counter-protesters have fought at times. Chatham County commissioner Karen Howard spoke with WUNC's Will Michaels and says she's disappointed by the court order, but is committed to finding a compromise.
