9/11 Memorial Events Around North Carolina

NCDVA Director Ilario Pantano, a former US Marine and witness to the attacks, will give remarks and introduce Speaker Pro Tempore of the NC House of Representatives Skip Stam. Representative Stam, also a former US Marine, will headline the ceremony and speak to the events of 9/11 and the courage of past, present and future generations of Americans. The event will include a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. for American Airlines Flight 11, and at 9:03 a.m. for United Airlines Flight 175, the times the planes struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City. A wreath laying will close the event, honoring all of the victims of 9/11, their families and the military personnel who courageously responded, sacrificed and endured in defense of our nation. This event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Public safety professionals will join college leaders and other members of the community at Wake Tech's Public Safety Education Campus. The event will include a special rose presentation at the Memorial Wall, a wreath-laying ceremony, and the release of doves. Wake Tech trains about about 8,000 law enforcement personnel each year.

On September 11, join your fellow Y members and Y staff for the 9/11 Day of Service as we volunteer in Durham. We'll be volunteering with Habitat for Humanity on four job sites, building homes for families in our community. Help us commemorate those who serve our country and honor the value of supporting each other.

Hosted by Activate Good in partnership with the Downtown Raleigh Alliance and the City of Raleigh, this third annual community-wide service event features hands-on, family-friendly volunteer projects as well as live music and refreshments. Admission to the evening commemoration is free, but guests are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to help “fill-the-truck” for the Urban Ministries of Wake County food pantry. Fort Bragg will honor and pay respects to the first responders and civilians who died during the 2001 terrorist attacks during a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony scheduled to take place Sept. 11. Brig. Gen. David Fox, former commanding general of the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, will be the guest speaker. The ceremony will consist of a patriotic performance by members of the 82nd Airborne Division Chorus, a wreath laying, a 21-gun salute and Taps. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place at the Hercules Gym on Pope Field.

Executives and community leaders from across the Triangle area will spend the night outside on cardboard flats to bring awareness to the issues of hunger, homelessness and poverty. In addition to spending the night outside, participants will get a deeper understanding of the many facets of these issues by engaging in extensive roundtable discussions with experts representing the many social impacts of childhood hunger and poverty. The agenda also includes presentations from the four finalists in the Social Innovation Challenge—100,000 Kids Hungry No More. The first event is a 9/11 at 9:00 a.m. at the student gazebo near the Tony Rand Student Center. Army Brigadier General Ferdinand Irizarry II will speak at the observance. The second event is a 9/11 Remembrance Concert at 12 noon on the front lawn of the Tony Rand Student Center featuring the FORSCOM Army Ground Forces Ceremonial Band. Seating for 150 attendees will be provided for the hour-long concert, and guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and lunch to enjoy on the lawn. Both events are free and open to the public.

Mobilize with fellow citizens to locally pay tribute to the tragic incidents of September 11, 2001 through a service project to benefit firefighters. The Town of Cary will host two opportunities for volunteers to construct raised vegetable gardens: September 11 from 4-6 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 1501 N. Harrison Avenue; and September 13 from 10 a.m.-noon at Fire Station 6, 3609 Ten-Ten Road. At each event, the Town of Cary will provide the tools and materials; volunteers only donate their time.

A 9/11 remembrance will be held at the Christian Life Center of First Baptist Church of Garner (601 St. Mary's St.) 11:30 a.m. tomorrow to recognize and honor emergency services personnel. The keynote speaker is Linda Hayes, who has served as the secretary of the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and chair of the Governor’s Crime Commission. Mayor Ronnie Williams will preside over the event. Area first-responders and numerous local officials will also be in attendance.
