Peter Wolf On World Cafe

Best known as the lead vocalist of the J. Geils Band (1967-83), Peter Wolf has since enjoyed a lengthy solo career. Wolf's music has explored a handful of very different genres, and his recently released seventh album, Midnight Souvenirs, finds the musician somewhere between down-home country and retro-leaning blues-rock.

Wolf first stepped into the music world as a DJ for Boston's WBCN in the 1960s. He initially made his own music as a solo artist, then pieced together his first band, The Hallucinations, which toured with top acts such as Van Morrison and Sun Ra. Upon seeing the J. Geils Blues Band, Wolf joined ranks with guitarist J. Geils and harp player Magic Dick as the group's frontman.

Midnight Souvenirs features contributions from Shelby Lynne, Neko Case and Merle Haggard, and Wolf used one of his paintings for the album cover. Here, Wolf and host David Dye discuss Midnight Souvenirs as the artist shares some of his favorite tunes from his old jukebox.

This episode was originally aired on Aug. 23, 2010.
