Four-time Grammy Award winner Lalo Schifrin grew up in Argentina and cut his teeth on tangos and Carnaval music. He studied classical music at the Paris Conservatory until the jazz world seduced him and he ended up playing with Dizzy Gillespie in the United States.
Schifrin wrote more than 100 film and TV scores, arranged the music for the Three Tenors and has a lifetime's worth of music to his name in both classical and jazz idioms.
Schifrin's "Tango del Atardecer" is one of his Letters from Argentina. It recalls the sound of the accordion-like bandoneón playing tangos in his homeland.
Performance Today presents the world premiere of Schifrin's Letters from Argentina, from a concert by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. And following that, we hear his most famous tune, the theme to Mission Impossible.
