Xavier Rudd, One-Man Band from Down Under

Growing up in a small Australian town, singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd gained inspiration from Aboriginal culture. And when he performs his music, Rudd surrounds himself with guitars, percussion, and didgeridoos.

Rudd's U.S. debut solo album is Solace. It's an eclectic set of music dealing with humanity, spirituality -- and ultimately compassion. Rudd has gained a reputation for combining his didgeridoo playing -- he's known to produce rarely-heard sounds -- with intricate guitar work and heartfelt vocals.

A typical stage setup for Rudd includes at least two didgeridoos angled toward him, which he plays while cradling his guitar -- and knocking out rhythms on a variety of percussion instruments.

Some of that was in evidence when he stopped by World Café to chat and play.
