It appears those interested in a state spending bill will need to wait another day or two.

Senate Leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore continue to negotiate budget details in Raleigh. Lawmakers had hoped a final budget would be released Friday, but that now looks unlikely.

While the two budgets have many identical provisions, there are notable differences over taxes, raises and pensions.

"I think if you look at the differences between the House budget and the Senate budget you can make some guesses, and you would not be too far off," said Berger. "But it changes a little bit as we continue to have discussions, and again, we will continue to work."

Berger’s chamber proposed a tax cut roughly three times what was introduced in the House budget. Leading Republicans remain optimistic that a budget deal is close. Two years ago deliberations stretched all the way through the summer and a deal wasn’t brokered until the end of September. A deal this year is likely to come sooner on the calendar.
