North Carolina is being upheld as the poster child for the tax plan Congressional Republicans are struggling to pass.U.S. Senator Thom Tillis was speaker of the North Carolina House when state lawmakers passed a tax overhaul that consolidated income tax rate tiers, simplified deductions, and cut corporate taxes.
Tillis said he recently explained to a fourth grade class that his home state has been thriving since state lawmakers passed a similar tax overhaul in 2013. He said that boosted North Carolina’s economy and caused a drop in poverty.
"The results are phenomenal and I'm completely convinced when we pass this bill we're going to completely unleash the power of the American economy and we're going do for the families across this nation what we started doing for the families in North Carolina five years ago,” Tillis said at a Republican press conference Tuesday in support of the federal tax overhaul. “It worked.”
Critics say North Carolina's education and infrastructure systems have suffered as a result of investments. They also believe that the federal plan primarily benefits corporations and the very wealthy.
