The Durham Public Schools will delay a major overhaul of its magnet system. The announcement was made earlier today by Superintendent Eric Becoats.
The decision to postpone the vote on the changes to the magnet system was made after hundreds of people attended and spoke out at information and public comment sessions. Becoats says one common message came through above all others.
Eric Becoats: "That this is happening too fast and more time is needed to examine the proposal gather additional feedback and engage in productive dialogue concerning potential solutions. We heard that message loud and clear."
The proposed changes would have closed and reopened some schools and significantly changed the Durham School of the Arts. That magnet school is one of the district’s most popular and successful schools. Becoats says the district will now look to implement magnet changes in the fall of 20-13.
