Feds Coming To Wake County

Federal civil rights investigators are in Raleigh tonight to host a public-comment session on possible violations by the Wake County School system.

The visit is part of the Department of Education’s investigation into the School Board’s abandonment of socio-economic diversity in its student assignment policy. The complaint that launched the investigation was filed by the North Carolina NAACP and other groups.

The meeting location is stirring up debate. Wake School district attorney Ann Majestic wrote in a letter to the federal investigators that the meeting place is “decidedly non-neutral.” The public event is being held at the Martin Street Baptist Church in southeast Raleigh. Groups opposing the current Board majority have held events at the church in the past year. Federal officials are offering to hold a second community event and allow the school system to choose the venue.
