Officials with Wake County Schools are visiting high schools across the county this week. They are holding public hearings on two very different proposed student assignment plans.
The public hearings are designed to give those without internet access a chance to chime in on the plans. The green plan and the blue plan have been online for a week, and have already drawn a great deal of interest. Many parents are expressing concern that the proposed plans do not include assignments for middle and high schools. Superintendent Tony Tata has repeatedly said the plans are still a work in progress. What they do show is a very different approach to assigning students. The green plan places more emphasis on student achievement zones to balance schools, so that no school has too high a percentage of low-achieving students.
The blue plan is based more on school choice and has no obvious way to assure that there are no schools made up of a high percentage of low-achieving students. The Wake School Board hopes to vote and implement a plan in time for the fall of 20-12.
