Greensboro Call Center Closing Investigated

The U.S. Department of Labor is investigating the closure of an American Express call center in Greensboro.

Jeff Tiberii: About 15-hundred employees were laid off last year when a facility in Greensboro closed. At the time American Express said the work would be shifted to other U.S. offices. Now, the Department of Labor is looking into whether any of the eliminated positions were sent overseas. If that's the case, employees who lost there jobs would be eligible for additional benefits through the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program. The TAA program spends nearly 1-billion dollars annually to provide workers who have been laid off with training and resources. A spokesman for the Labor Department declined to say how long the investigation will take. Calls to American Express were not returned.

Jeff Tiberii is the co-host of WUNC's "Due South." Jeff joined WUNC in 2011. During his 20 years in public radio, he was Morning Edition Host at WFDD and WUNC’s Greensboro Bureau Chief and later, the Capitol Bureau Chief. Jeff has covered state and federal politics, produced the radio documentary “Right Turn,” launched a podcast, and was named North Carolina Radio Reporter of the Year four times.
