First Segment of Triangle Expressway Open

North Carolina's first modern-era toll road opens later this morning in the Research Triangle Park. The first leg of the Triangle Expressway connects highway 147 to North Carolina 540. Officials say they'll cut the ribbon at about 10:30 a.m. with the road open for traffic around noon. David Joyner is the executive director of the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. He says drivers will not have to pay until January 3rd.

David Joyner: "The toll for this stretch will be about 50 cents if you do have a transponder and if you don't have a transponder that's ok, but the toll will be about 70 cents, 77 cents I think, for the entire run and we'll have to take a picture of course of your license plate and send you an invoice."
Joyner says drivers will not have to slow down to pay tolls. He says hi-tech cameras can take accurate photos of license plates on cars moving in excess of 120 miles per hour. He says drivers with transponders also will not have to slow down when using the expressway.

Eric Hodge hosts WUNC’s broadcast of Morning Edition, and files reports for the North Carolina news segments of the broadcast. He started at the station in 2004 doing fill-in work on weekends and All Things Considered.
