A settlement between the Environmental Protection Agency and the Tennessee Valley Authority includes a payment to North Carolina. The TVA agreed to implement better emissions technology at all of its coal-fired plants including the four closest to North Carolina. Attorney General Roy Cooper filed a lawsuit against the TVA in 2006.
Roy Cooper: "This is a significant victory for the people of North Carolina. North Carolina businesses will benefit from lower healthcare costs and more tourism dollars, and all of us will benefit from better health."
The deal includes a payment of 11 million dollars for energy efficiency projects in North Carolina as part of a bigger investment in clean energy. Cooper says they haven't yet determined how that money will be spent.
