Jury Selection Begins in Edwards Trial

Jury Selection begins today in the trial of former North Carolina Senator John Edwards.

Jeff Tiberii: The trial is set to begin 10 months after the former presidential candidate was indicted on six counts of federal campaign finance violations. Prosecutors allege that Edwards used more than 900 thousand dollars to hide an affair and child he fathered. Defense attorneys contend the money was a personal gift and not a campaign contribution. They plan to call on two former Federal Election Commission employees as experts in campaign finance law. Meanwhile the prosecution has listed the woman Edwards has an affair with as a possible witness. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty. Judge Catherin Eagles expects the trial to last about six weeks.

Jeff Tiberii is the co-host of WUNC's "Due South." Jeff joined WUNC in 2011. During his 20 years in public radio, he was Morning Edition Host at WFDD and WUNC’s Greensboro Bureau Chief and later, the Capitol Bureau Chief. Jeff has covered state and federal politics, produced the radio documentary “Right Turn,” launched a podcast, and was named North Carolina Radio Reporter of the Year four times.
