In our last episode, you might remember, our hero chased The Beef Cooka and his driver to a fiery crash at a police roadblock. But somehow, the wily Beef Cooka escaped.

This week, the search for the sinister fiend must wait as the green-caped avenger, the Jade City Pharaoh,  embarks on a personal crusade to save his detective friend from destroying herself. It's a quest that threatens a budding romance.

Jade City Pharaoh stars Mike Wiley.  The series is written by Howard Craft, with music by the Apple Juice Kid. WUNC's Frank Stasio is the producer/director. Follow our hero on Twitter: @JadeCityWarrior and on Facebook.

Cast:

  • Mike Wiley as Herald MF Jones
  • Chaunesti Webb as  Belinda Goodall
  • Dana Marks as Martina McCoy

SOUND EFFECT : street sounds, then foot steps.SCALPER
Hey yo yo yo shorty, doll, need tickets?

BELINDA
I'm not your shorty and I have tickets.

SCALPER
Beyonce' gon start in a few.  I can hook you now.  All I need is 500-

BELINDA
If you don't get your raggedy behind away from me-

SCALPER
Hey!  What you going in your purse for?   I'm gone, you ain't got to get the mace out.
Sound Effect:  cell phone ringing and then going to answering machine.

JONES (on answering machine)
This is Malik, leave it at the beep…
Sound Effect: Beep!

BELINDA
(angry with frantic tinge)
Where are you?  Has something happened?  (let's out deep breath)  I can't eat these tickets Malik, you know what they cost me.  You better be pulling up here in the next five minutes.
Sound Effects:  Belinda ending the call.

Narrator: But Malik Frasier won't be making it to the concert. He's taken the form of his alter ego, Herald Jones, and he's winging his way to O'Malley's Pub on the other side of town where a lonely detective Marti McCoy is desperately trying to forget her painful past.

Scene2:  O'Malley's Pub

Sound Effects: Street sounds again, then Herald flying and landing. Doors opening, bar sounds. Herald walking.

MARTY
(singing softly, drunkenly)

No promises, no demands
Both of us knowing

Sound effect:  Marty takes a long swig from glass and slams it on the table
Love is a battlefield......

JONES
Marty!

MARTY
O'Malley called you didn't he, the freakin snitch!

JONES
How long you been off the wagon?

MARTY
Why do you care?

JONES
Cause I care about you and I also care about Pat Benatar's song -- which you're destroying.

(Drunken singing)

MARTY
Leave me alone JONES.

JONES
You stopped going to your meetings didn't you? Damn it, Marty!

MARTY
You know Scruggs was looking for me the night he killed Danny, three years ago today.

JONES
I know.

MARTY
It wasn't a clean shoot when I shot Scruggs. He never saw it coming. Put a hole in his back the size of a soft ball, didn't make me feel better though, but scotch does.

JONES
It's not helping the pain, it's hiding it, making it worse.

MARTY
I didn't call you Jones.  I don't want to hear this crap.

JONES
But you should have called me and you're gonna hear it.  I can't help if you won't let me.

MARTY
Your Dr. Phil game is pretty lame dude.

JONES
Lame is not calling your sponsor.

MARTY
Can you bring Danny back to life?  That's the help I need!  Can you do that!?
(silence)
That's what I thought.

JONES
It's not your fault Danny's dead.  You got to let that go.

MARTY
She should have left me and she didn't.  I begged her to.  It's too dangerous for anyone to love me, but she believed in us and now….  she's dead.
  (Marty breaks down in tears)

JONES
Hey.. .  Hey…  Come on now.  Look, I'm flying you home okay. Tomorrow's a new day.  I'll take you to Dame's Chicken and Waffles for breakfast and we'll talk. Come on.
Sound Effect:  Herald leaving the bar, then flying, then phone ringing and going to voice mail

JONES (on answering machine)
This is Malik, leave it at the beep…
Sound Effect: beep!

BELINDA
This is the last time you do this to me Malik Frasier.  It's inconsiderate and disrespectful and I'm done with it.  You hear me. I'm done with you.  Lose my number.

Theme music.

End Episode.
