Negotiating With Kidnappers

Dick speaks with Richard Wright, who has negotiated the release of kidnap victims in Mexico and other countries. He says almost always, the kidnappers have done their homework and know the family has money. He has supervised negotiations and says that waiting is the hardest part - both for him and the families.

Prison Portraits - The Ciudad Juarez Women's Prison

Photographer Katie Orlinsky was based in Mexico and she saw that women were caught up in the drug wars and began to document it. She started attending community groups for people who had lost family members and came to know families who had lost loved ones.  She also got permission to spend time in the women’s prison in Ciudad Juarez and did a series of portraits of the convicted women serving time for drug trafficking, homicide and kidnapping.

Walking To Another Life

Much of the Sonoran desert between Arizona and Mexico is a wasteland of discarded shoes, shirts and empty plastic water jugs. People leave Mexico in search of a dream. Some lose. They die from dehydration and exposure. This is a soundscape with the voice of writer Charles Bowden and produced by Kara Oehler and Ann Hepperman.
