A handful of people were arrested in Arlington, Texas prior to college football's national championship game. They were arrested for unauthorized sale of items with college logos.
Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) is a partner organization of Winston-Salem based IMG College. They are responsible for helping schools to protect and enforce against unauthorized use of their valuable trademarks.
"From a legal perspective it's really just like any other property theft," explained Bruce Siegel, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for CLC. "It's taking property that does not belong to you and appropriating it for your own benefit," he added.
Siegel says bogus merchandise means lost revenues for colleges and universities and a lesser product for consumers. Ohio State handily beat Oregon in the game.
