Chatham County's new Justice Center is open for business.
The new justice center has four courtrooms, and significantly more office space than the previous, historic courthouse in Pittsboro. Plans to move out of that building started 13 years ago, but a fire in 2010 threatened its future. David Hughes is the Public Works Director in Chatham county. He says the 130-year-old building has been preserved.
David Hughes: "The main courtroom will be reconstructed and it will be used for primarily board of commissioners meetings and some civil superior court. First floor will have some exhibition space for the Chatham County Historical Preservation."
As for the new 21-million-dollar courthouse, it will hold 100 employees including offices for the district attorney and public defender. A ribbon cutting commemorating the new justice center takes place today at 2 PM.
