The garage band Girls knows how to craft a charming, sweet rock song that stays light and airy, even with a fair amount of surfside reverb. Sure, the San Franciscans pay homage to early rock 'n' roll sounds, but they also seamlessly weave in thick, warm, sun-drenched textures laced with simple drum beats and surprisingly tender guitars.
In "Carolina," what results sounds like a rock band recording a country song while high on the beach after listening to James Taylor. It could easily have resulted in a muddled sound with too many ideas poured into one musical bowl, but it blends into a wonderfully vibrant summery soup. The aforementioned reverb, along with a gentle slide guitar and endearingly dreamy vocals, melt together to form a song that's deceptively simple. Even with all of those elements in place, it never even threatens to collapse under its own weight, instead finding a place where adorability and sophistication coexist.
