Los Angeles is booming with artists specializing in lo-fi surf-rock and Best Coast is the trend's sweetheart. The trio's hazy and heavily distorted sound began with a collaboration between frontwoman Bethany Cosentino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno. With several 7" singles and EPs to its name, Best Coast officially became a functioning trio in 2010 when drummer Ali Koehler left Vivian Girls.
Together, they dominated the lo-fi rock scene with the release of Crazy For You in July. Building upon the success of Best Coast's string of EP releases and subsequent fanbase, Crazy For You managed to enter the Top 40 on Billboard's 200 album chart. Quite a feat for the group, and proof that drowned-out indie-pop hooks and nonchalant lyrics aren't just for college kids anymore.
With countless references to her beloved west coast, Cosentino's lyrical simplicity may lack in depth, but that's part of what makes Best Coast's summery straightforwardness perfect for a laid-back afternoon.
