Alec Ounsworth: Tiny Desk Concert

I met Alec Ounsworth four years ago on a tour bus outside the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. We were webcasting a concert by his band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I remember leaving the interview and thinking that, as good as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah was, Ounsworth had a lot more creative music to make.

Ounsworth recently recorded some songs with his Philadelphia-based friends in a band called Flashy Python, which features members of Dr. Dog, The Walkmen and Man Man. And in the fall of 2009, he released a solo record called Mo' Beauty, which he wrote and recorded in New Orleans with a group of local musicians and producer Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, The Blasters).

Now, Ounsworth has put a new band together to tour with the music of Mo' Beauty. But when he came to the NPR Music offices to perform a Tiny Desk Concert, his sound was stripped down to just two acoustic guitars, accompanied only by his bandmate and guitarist, Matt Sutton.

In 1988, a determined Bob Boilen started showing up on NPR's doorstep every day, looking for a way to contribute his skills in music and broadcasting to the network. His persistence paid off, and within a few weeks he was hired, on a temporary basis, to work for All Things Considered. Less than a year later, Boilen was directing the show and continued to do so for the next 18 years.
