John K. Samson formed The Weakerthans in Manitoba 10 years ago. The former Propagandhi member had left his punk band to start a publishing company, but he wanted to create an outlet to perform once again. The Weakerthans took a more melodic approach than Propagandhi, but retained a political consciousness.
The band released two well-received albums of guitar-driven rock: Fallow and Left and Leaving. Following the departure of founding member John Sutton and the addition of his replacement, Greg Smith, The Weakerthans released Reconstruction Site in 2003. The group's latest album, Reunion Tour, features recurring characters, literary takes on Samson's Canadian homeland and musical tributes to painter Edward Hopper.
