After 17 days of grueling competition, 25-year-old Alexander Kobrin has been named the gold medalist of the 2005 Van Cliburn Piano Competition. The Russian pianist wins a cash award of $25,000, performance engagements around the world and the opportunity to record on the Harmonia Mundi label. Nineteen-year-old Joyce Yang of South Korea, the youngest finalist, won the silver medal.
From the final round of competition, Kobrin plays Mozart's Concerto No. 20 in d minor with the Fort Worth Symphony and conductor James Conlon.
