Oscars: And the Nominees Are...

The Return of the King, the last film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, heads the Academy Awards race with 11 nominations, including best picture and best director. Master and Commander gets 10 Oscar nods. With her film Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola becomes the first American woman to be nominated for best director. Another first: 13-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes becomes the youngest person ever to be nominated for best actress. NPR's Kim Masters reports.

Actors Union Sets January Strike Vote

The Screen Actors Guild plans to send strike authorization ballots to more than 100,000 union members Jan. 2. Votes will be counted on Jan. 23. That is nearly two weeks after the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, but ahead of the Feb. 22 Academy Awards show, which is the most important date on the Hollywood calendar.
With New Show, Leno Stays At NBC

Starting in fall 2009, NBC is going to program its 10-11 p.m. hour with Jay Leno five nights a week. NBC wanted to keep Leno though it is committed to giving the 11:30 p.m. slot to Conan O'Brien in 2009, and it is cheaper to produce five hours of Leno than scripted dramas.
