A new mental health urgent care center will be the first of its kind in Guilford County.
The $28 million center will have 16 licensed beds, including some for adults and adolescents. It will also provide medical and psychiatric care for patients with mental health or substance abuse disorders.
It's a collaboration between Guilford County, Cone Health and the Sandhills Center. The three entities have been working on bringing the center to life for the past two years.
Guilford County Board of Commissioners Vice Chairman Jeff Phillips called the collaboration "unusual."
"Behavioral health experts will tell that that's the direction we should be going and need to go to provide one access point to treat physical needs and mental health needs in one location," he said.
He also said he hopes the center will become a trendsetter among other counties.
"The integration of both physical or medical care and behavioral health care is not only unusual, but it's not really being done and that's a real opportunity for us to be an example," he said.
The center is expected to open in fall 2020.
