There was plenty of budget discussion at the North Carolina General Assembly this week. But for now, still no agreement on a state spending plan. Many Democrats, led by the Governor, are pushing for the expansion of Medicaid as part of any compromise. Some Republicans, led by legislative leaders, continue to balk at that request, and say the minority party is holding the budget hostage.

Robert Reives (D-Chatham) is the Deputy Democratic Leader in the NC House. On this edition of the podcast he talks budget impasse, an upcoming state gerrymandering trial, as well as the flurry of action in NBA Free Agency.

Jeff Tiberii first started posing questions to strangers after dinner at La Cantina Italiana, in Massachusetts, when he was two-years-old. Jeff grew up in Wayland, Ma., an avid fan of the Boston Celtics, and took summer vacations to Acadia National Park (ME) with his family. He graduated from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, and moved to North Carolina in 2006. His experience with NPR member stations WAER (Syracuse), WFDD (Winston-Salem) and now WUNC, dates back 15 years.
