The City of Fayetteville wants the remaining damaged homes from the April 16th tornadoes cleaned up. The twisters that swept across the state left thousands of homes damaged or destroyed. Scott Shuford, Fayetteville's Development Services Director, says they've identified 85 homes in need of extensive cleanup or repair four months after the storms hit. He says they don't have any jurisdiction to do anything about homes that are just eye-sores.
Scott Shuford: "But if they have yard debris that is sufficiently extensive that vermin are starting to gather there... Similarly, if it's a house that a section of the roof has blown off and there's no apparent effort to remediate that situation, then we've got a public health issue that we've got to address."
Shuford says the city sent out letters to those owners to find out what the delay is. He says some will probably have good reasons but those that don't could be looking at further action from the city.
Shuford: "That process would be that we send out a notice of violation giving them a period of time to comply with the requirements of whatever violation there would be. Should they fail to comply within that time frame, then we follow that up with the establishment of some fines."
