As part of a continuing series exploring the connections between international folk and classical music, Performance Today travels to the Nordic countries of Finland, Norway, Iceland and Sweden.
Jón Leifs' Icelandic Dances bring the stark sound of the country's landscape to music. And in NPR's Studio 4A, fiddlers Loretta Kelley and Andrea Hoag demonstrate the sounds of the hardanger fiddle, an instrument that Norwegian national hero Edvard Grieg incorporated into his piano music. Finally, Finnish band JPP plays its own string arrangements of traditional Finnish music.
