A proposal under consideration by state officials may help protect Haw River and surrounding areas. The plan involves reclassifying a portion of the river in and around Guilford County. This aims to preserve existing water resources by limiting development. Jason Martin heads planning in nearby Alamance County. He says the river’s status as an emergency water supply led to the push for reclassification.
Jason Martin: "Haw River reclassification is due to an emergency intake that’s being placed on the Haw River for the city of Greensboro, for them to be able to pull water out during a drought."
If the proposal is approved, affected areas will face harsher development and discharge requirements starting in March 20-12. So far Alamance and Guilford County officials do not expect it to significantly impact plans for development.
