Wildfire Still Burning in Cumberland County

A wildfire in Cumberland County has destroyed about 1,000 acres of woods since Monday afternoon. The blaze continues to burn about five miles south of the Cedar Creek community in Fayetteville. State officials say firefighters are successfully controlling the fire. But Brian Haines of the North Carolina Forest Service says it's too early to tell exactly when crews will have the fire fully contained.

"We're actually getting an incident management team out there to manage the resources on the fire and those folks, when they get out there, they'll start making plans and they'll have a better handle on all of that just in terms of planning and kind of get an idea of when they can get a containment on this."

Haines says crews evacuated six houses near the fire Monday afternoon, but those residents have returned home. No other evacuations are in effect. Dry and windy conditions have allowed small wildfires to burn about 8,000 acres of forests across North Carolina since last week.
