UNC Names Interim Police Chief

UNC Police

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has named Thomas Younce as its new interim police chief.

Younce will take over on July 1. UNC says he has worked on university campuses like ECU, N.C. State, Queens University and North Carolina A&T State University for the last 15 years.

He takes over for Jeff McCracken, who announced his retirement in April. Campus Police faced criticism for the way it handled protests over the Confederate statue known as Silent Sam during McCracken's tenure.

UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz has created a committee to review campus safety practices.

The University says it plans to complete its national search for a permanent chief before the start of the school year.
