The committee overseeing PNC Arena plans to maximize use of the facility's outdoor space.

Fans of the Carolina Hurricanes and NC State's men's basketball team could soon have new places to grill before a game or clink glasses after a victory.

Tom McCormick, chairman of the state-appointed Centennial Authority that oversees PNC Arena, said they are planning for major renovations.

"We're 15 years old now, starting into our 16th year. And like everything else, it's always good to freshen up," he said.

PNC Arena's multi-million dollar face lift could include a rooftop patio and space for luxury tailgating.

McCormick said the arena has more than 19,000 seats and has experienced numerous upgrades in the past 15 years, including all new LED lighting last year.

"There won't be anything actually done in the arena bowl itself. We've kept the bowl in really good shape, but we're trying to enhance all the experiences you might have here outside the bowl," McCormick said.

"We're trying to get a better use of our outdoor facilities here. We have a very nice plaza in front of the building, so we're trying to put some entertainment, dining and drinking and gathering places with outdoor patios that can be used most of the year around here with our weather."

His organization has been working with Ratio360 consulting firm to make the most of the building's exterior and back-of-house operations.

McCormick said they will look for funding sources once the final budget is drawn up.
