Jake Xerxes Fussell's family history plays a significant role in his musical output. The son of a folklorist, curator and photographer spent his childhood listening to old bluesmen and Native American artists his father was recording.

Fussell traveled from his native Georgia to California and Mississippi, winding up in Durham where he now lives. Along the way he learned and collected songs that show up on his new record OUT OF SIGHT.

"..for me, the process has to be connecting with something emotionally and then drawing out certain aspects..singing it from a place that feels real to me rather than me trying to emulate someone else."

Fussell playsDuke Gardens with a band of local all-stars on July 10th. You can hear more of his music at WUNC Music and at 91.5 HD2.

Eric Hodge hosts WUNC’s broadcast of Morning Edition, and files reports for the North Carolina news segments of the broadcast. He started at the station in 2004 doing fill-in work on weekends and All Things Considered.
Brian Burns is the Music Director for WUNC Music, WUNC's AAA music discovery station. He has been working within the local music scene for over a decade. On the weekends you might see him DJing at various spots around the Triangle, or digging through boxes of records. He's also the host of Future Shock on WUNC Music and a contributor to NPR Music. He graduated from UNC’s School of Information and Library Science with an MSLS in 2015.
