The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a confirmation hearing Monday for Merrick Garland, President Biden's nominee for attorney general.
Garland is the former chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and has deep ties to the Justice Department, where he served as a prosecutor decades ago.
The 68-year-old was once nominated to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in 2016. But Sen. Mitch McConnell refused to hear his confirmation and Garland’s nomination expired in 2017, paving the way for President Donald Trump to nominate Republican Neil Gorsuch to the seat.
