The US Fish and Wildlife Service and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission are investigating the shooting of a mature bald eagle in Warren County near the Virginia border. They're offering a $2,500 reward for anyone with information that leads to a conviction.
Richard Creech with the NC Wildlife Resources Commission says the eagle was found last week in Wise, North Carolina."
There’s no reason for the bird to be shot. There’s no way it could be mixed up with anything else. It was clearly a mature bald eagle with a white head. They’re hard to mistake for anything else."
The bird had a broken wing and was treated but died on Monday. Bald eagles are protected by federal wildlife statutes. The person caught could be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to up to one year in prison.
