Triangle-Area Universities Welcome Class Of 2020

College students are back in the Triangle. UNC-Chapel Hill begins classes this week and the class of 2020 is settling in at Duke.

The admissions rate at UNC-Chapel Hill fell from 30 percent last year to 26 percent this year, and the number of North Carolinians offered admission rose seven percent.

Duke received more than 32,000 applications this year, the second highest number of applicants the school has ever received. Among those in the incoming class, half are students of color, according to university officials.

NC Central also had a busy year in the admissions office—the university experienced a 19 percent increase in applications for the incoming class.

Meanwhile, NC State's Class of 2020 is the first freshmen class in the school’s history to have students from all 50 states and all 100 counties in North Carolina.

NC Central and NC State have already resumed classes for the year.
