North Carolina’s highest court won’t hasten an appeal by an advocacy group and state Democrats who say the Republican-controlled General Assembly didn’t do a good enough job redrawing legislative districts for the 2020 elections.
The state Supreme Court’s denial on Friday of the request by plaintiffs in a lawsuit likely means elections will be held using all the districts redrawn in September.
The plaintiffs had requested the Supreme Court step in and hear their appeal of eight state House districts now, rather than require it go through the intermediate Court of Appeals first. This will result in a lengthier process that probably wouldn’t be resolved for several months at least.
A panel of three trial court judges upheld last month all the remapping that they ordered Republicans to perform.
