Greensboro Committee Recommends Tougher Rules For Nightclubs

A new proposed ordinance in Greensboro would require nightclubs where multiple incidents of violence have taken place to meet greater security standards. This week, a city council sub-committee said it wants to implement requirements for greater security measures at venues that have been the site of multiple violent crimes during one year.

Under the ordinance serious violent crimes would be murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Business owners and lawmakers do not see eye to eye on the possible measure. Owners, and other opponents contend there are already laws on the books to deal with problems at clubs and that no evidence indicates a new ordinance would lead to any change. City leaders want to require greater security measures for clubs where multiple violent crimes have occurred.

Late in 2010, one person was killed, and five were shot, during multiple shootings that took place at or just outside of several downtown clubs. A new ordinance would require clubs to have state-licensed personnel and a proportional amount of security after multiple violent disturbances.  The full council will consider adopting the ordinance at its March 19th meeting.
